November 10 Meeting Notes

present: Gene Monaco, Richard Austin, Deborah Austin, Danny de Vries, Karen Lacey, Cara Crisler, Allen Barges, Rebekah Woods, Mary Rogge, Linda Ewald, and Will Kidd

Announcements

* Meeting with Margaret Held at the Vestal site, Nov. 11, 2:00 p.m.

* Karen is busy working on a paper concerning ecovillages. She would like for everyone involved with KEVP to speak their thoughts on the matter into a tape recorder..

* Danny and Cara are working on a grant proposal for the Appalachian Community Fund. It is for the FGS Sustainable Living Program, but concerns the KEVP. Funds have been requested for the research for a bioregional ecovillage manual. Parts of the proposal can most likely be used in the future for KEVP grant proposals. Mary R. also has some materials useful for KEVP..

* Remember that we have reserved a booth at the Thanksgiving Potluck, THIS Sunday Nov. 23, 5:15 p.m. in the Candy Factory. A refresher on who is responsible for what:.

¥ Brochures (Gene and Richard)
¥ 3 minute video from the Ecovillage Network (Gene)
¥ TV and VCR, sign up list, donations jar, paper, pens, & misc.(Cara & Danny)
¥ Co-housing examples/display (Rebekah)
¥ Something scrumptious for the potluck! (everyone)
Business

In spreading the vision, KEVP:
¥ already has a website that looks great (www.korrnet.org/fgs/kevp)
¥ is in the process of creating a brochure
¥ is in the process of setting up other booth materials
¥ is organizing a seminar (perhaps a series of seminars) to be held at Ijams (see below)

In addition to this, Danny has proposed that we get busy putting on paper our individual expertise. This would serve to educate ourselves about the knowledge of our own group, enhance our website, and begin a kind of "skills bank." This latter would at this time be most helpful in knowing exactly who could lecture, present, or consult if/when we are approached by other groups or individuals. Everyone be thinking about what you would like to write (about 3 pages worth?). Teamwork is of course also possible.
Ecovillage Seminar

In the second week of December, a 1 1/2 hour presentation will be given to the Ijams staff concerning the ecovillage seminar that Rebekah has been organizing. She has already made a tentative syllabus. Richard and Cara will meet with Rebekah to fine tune it. Assuming that all goes well with the staff presentation, the seminar will be held somewhere between January and March of 1998. Rather than charging $25.00 a person, we will most likely ask for donations ($25 recommended). These and other details will be worked out at the upcoming KEVP meetings.

The Natural Step Presentation

Will Kidd gave a good presentation about the Natural Step. It states 4 systems conditions which give businesses a framework for long term strategic sustainable development. The Ecovillage concept could possibly use and integrate such a philosophy into its main structure. If anyone hears about an opportunity for Will to give another presentation, please let Danny know.

Next meeting: November 24 We have no presenters, but we can (briefly) discuss the Ecovillage seminar. Please be thinking about the reference materials you might have that could be useful for the seminar preparations. (This entails a broad range from technical info to socio-economic issues of sustainable living.) Also, we can have a formal discussion about the structure of our group, future meetings, ad hoc workgroups, etc. Come with any ideas.
